Kalevi Aho was born in Forssa, south-western Finland, in 1949. His musical education began in earnest at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he was taught composition by Einojuhani Rautavaara (b. 1928), considered by many to be the greatest Finnish composer since Sibelius.
